People are upgrading their locks from traditional to electronic deadbolts and smart locks. 

But these electronic deadbolts also have a few issues that sometimes need resetting. 

Before you factory reset your Defiant lock, it is important to try other troubleshooting steps. 

If those do not work, you jump to resetting the lock.

In this section, we will understand the reasons behind the resetting of the electronic deadbolts:

The defiant electronic deadbolt is not responding

One common reason behind the electronic deadbolt not responding could be dead batteries or wire not appropriately connected to the connector port. 

A constant flash or beeping sound will occur when the batteries are low. It is better to change the batteries before they are dead. 

But if everything is fine in your lock, there might be some other minor technical issues. You can fix it by simply resetting the Defiant deadbolt. 

The master lock does not change

When you start programming the Defiant lock, you begin with the Master code. It is the main code that allows you to enter the house. 

Without a master code, you cannot reach the user code part or enter the house. 

The default Master code of the Defiant electronic deadbolt is always 123456. 

You should change it so others cannot enter your house when you program it. 

But a problem occurs when your Master code does not work. 

It means the door still opens with the old code, not the new one. 

If that happens, factory reset the Defiant lock without programming and reprogram all the codes.

The defiant lock cannot lock or unlock

The common reason is that you must not have entered the correct code, the battery is low, or the cable needs to be firmly connected to the port. 

Sometimes, you will see that the red indicator light keeps on when the lock does not work. 

Try checking the batteries and the wire connection once. 

If everything is fine, the SET button might have been jammed. 

Reset your Defiant lock and start everything from the beginning. 

The defiant lock cannot add or delete the user codes

The problem is similar to the Master code. If any button gets stuck, the lock refuses to add or delete any codes.

Besides, there might be other problems like:

  • Wong programming
  • Too late in programming for which the lock timeout occurs. 
  • You have used 10 user codes; no extra code is left to add. 

Check these first. If these are not the issues, reset your lock.

Resetting the Defiant electronic deadbolt

When you reset the Defiant electronic deadbolt, you bring the lock back as it was when it was manufactured. 

All the codes and other programming will get deleted. 

You must set all the codes and modes anew to get the programming back.

Here is how you can reset a Defiant electronic deadbolt with a few simple steps:

  1. Open the door and remove the battery compartment’s cover. If your deadbolt has no battery cover, you can skip this part. 
  2. Now, remove one battery from the compartment. You do not have to remove all; one will work. You can skip this part if your deadbolt does not work with a battery. 
  3. Press and hold the LOCK button until the lights flash twice or the entry code displays on the screen. Replace the battery by holding the button.
  4. Within 10 seconds, you must press and hold the button again until you see the lights flashing or the entry code displaying. 
  5. You have now successfully reset your Defiant electronic deadbolt. 

There is another method:

  1. Remove the battery cover and one battery. 
  2. Press and hold the SET button and replace the battery while holding it. 
  3. Keep holding until you hear a long and a short beep. 
  4. Release the button after you hear them both and enter the default master code 123456 and complete the factory reset process. 

Restoring the factory setting will erase all the existing codes and modes. 

You must reprogram the lock, add new codes, and apply the auto-lock or vacation mode according to your need.

Reconfiguring the electronic deadbolt after a reset

Reconfiguring the electronic deadbolt involves adding the master code, the user codes, and the auto locks. 

You can enable the vacation mode and disable the beeping sound for extra safety. 

Let’s discuss the code reconfigurations one by one for basic functioning:

Adding new Master code

To apply the master code after resetting:

  1. Press and hold the SET button until you hear a beeping sound. The SET button will be located above the Interior Thumbturn.
  2. Release the button and enter the Master code. 
  3. Again press the LOCK button. 
  4. Press 1 and 0, and then the LOCK button. 
  5. Enter the new 6-digit Master code and then the LOCK button.

Adding new User codes

Besides the Master code, you need another User code for an individual. For that:

  1. Press and hold the SET button until the beeping sound. 
  2. Release the button, enter the current Master code, and press the LOCK button. 
  3. Press 2 and 0, and then the LOCK button. 
  4. Enter the new 4-6 digit code and press the LOCK button. 

You can repeat this process to set up to 10 codes. 

Turning on the Auto-lock mode

The auto-lock feature automatically locks your door after a few seconds if you keep the door ajar and not locked. 

You can select a time limit anywhere between 10 and 99 seconds. After the timeout, the door will automatically lock. 

Follow the steps below to enable this:

  1. Press and hold the SET button until you hear the beep sound. 
  2. Release the button, enter the Master code, and press the LOCK button. 
  3. Press 8 and 0, and again press the LOCK button. 
  4. Press 1 and the LOCK button and turn on the auto-lock function.

This process will lock your door after 10 seconds automatically. To increase the timing:

  1. Repeat the first two steps.
  2. Press 7 and 0 and then the LOCK button. 
  3. Enter the preferred timing. 
  4. Press the LOCK button and complete the process. 

There is another method if your lock does not have any beeping sound. Here you need to rely on the light flashes:

  1. Press and hold the LOCK button until you see the light right around the button. 
  2. Enter your User code and wait 30 seconds for the lock to enter the programming mode. 
  3. If the lock ring blinks red slowly every 5 seconds, it is ready for new settings. 
  4. Press the MENU and then the AUTO-LOCK option to enable it or AUTO-LOCK off to disable it. 
  5. Press any button on either side of the deadbolt and not the LOCK. When the light ring blinks yellow once and turns green, you have successfully enabled the Auto-lock option. 

You can also follow this even if you have a beeping sound.

Beeping sound

To disable the beeping sound:

  1. Press and hold the SET button and release it after a beep.
  2. Enter the Master code and press the LOCK button.
  3. Click 6 and 0, and then again press the LOCK button.
  4. Press 0 and press the LOCK button to turn off the beep. 

Another method:

  1. Make sure your lock is unlocked.
  2. Press 1 for 3 seconds, 0 for 3 seconds, and again 1 for 3 seconds.
  3. You will no longer hear the beeping sound.

Vacation mode

It is occasional. 

If the lock created issues when you were leaving for a vacation, and the mode was on, you have to turn that on again:

  1. Press and hold the SET button until you hear the beeping sound, then release it.
  2. Enter the Master code and press the LOCK button. 
  3. Press 5 and 0, and again press the LOCK button. 
  4. Now, press 1 and again the LOCK button to turn on the Vacation mode.

Thankfully, there are ways to fix these issues and below are some of them:

Dead batteries

Dead batteries are one of the most common methods that create issues during resetting. 

These electronic deadbolts work with four AA alkaline batteries. 

No matter how many times you try to reset it, the lock won’t reset if the batteries are low or dead. 

To troubleshoot the problem, replace the old batteries. 

You can prevent this when you receive the lock signalling about the dead batteries. It will constantly beep or blink the red light. 

Programming errors

Programming errors can also create issues when you try to reset the lock. 

Even after a successful reset, you will have issues. 

Check the manual once for correct programming and ensure you follow each step accurately. 

If not, you have to reset the lock again and again.

Jammed lock

A jammed lock or a jammed button in the lock can disturb you from proper lock resetting. 

The problem with the lock occurs when you do not connect the lock and align it correctly with the other assembly via the metal blade. 

You may have to open the lock again, check the alignment, connect it with screws, and reset the programming. 

Damaged or corroded parts

The contacts between the battery and the deadbolt can become dirty over time, or corrode due to the moisture, especially when it contacts the rainwater. 

If that happens, resetting will not help. 

Clean the deadbolts properly and reset them again. 

Call a professional to ask what should be done if there is corrosion.

Mechanical problems 

You cannot program the lock properly if your electronic deadbolt has mechanical errors or manufacturing defects. 

Even if you manage to program it, you have to reset it multiple times, and still, you will end up with the same old issues. 

Call a professional to ask whether you need to replace or repair it in such a condition.

Resetting the electronic deadbolt in different models

Besides Defiant, other models available are Garrison, AmazonBasics, Honeywell digitals, Tru-Bolt, and various others. 

This section discusses the resetting methods for 6 types of electronic deadbolts besides Defiant. 

If you have any from the list, you can follow this article to reset them. Let’s begin:

Garrison Round Electronic deadbolts

  1. On the interior assembly of the electronic deadbolt, insert a pin into the hole below the turn-piece for 5 seconds. It will let you reach the RESET button. 
  2. Wait until you hear 3 long beeping sounds. 
  3. The beeping sound indicates you have successfully reset your Garrison round deadbolt.

Tru-bolt electronic deadbolt

  1. Remove the battery cover and one battery. 
  2. Wait for 10 seconds, and put the battery back in place.
  3. You will hear a long and a short beep. 
  4. Press the LOCK button thrice within 3 seconds.
  5. When the lock beeps for once and the green indicator light flashes, you have successfully reset your deadbolt.

AmazonBasics electronic deadbolt

  1. Remove the battery cover and locate and press the RESET button. It will be a round button labelled R. 
  2.  Hold the button for 6 seconds until you hear 3 beeping sounds. 
  3. The 3 long beeping sounds will show that you have successfully reset your lock. 
  4. Now, perform the door handing identification to ensure optimal operation. 

Toledo electronic deadbolt

  1. Remove the battery cover and find the RESET button. It will be a black circle button with an R label.
  2. Press and hold the button for 5 seconds until you hear 3 beeps.
  3. After that, release the button. You have successfully reset your lock. 

Gatehouse Electronic lock

  1. Remove the battery cover and one battery from the compartment on the interior assembly. 
  2. Press and hold the SET button. It is a small circuit inside the assembly. 
  3. While holding the button, put the battery in place and release it. 
  4. When the green LED lights up, you have successfully reset the lock.

Honeywell digital electronic deadbolt

  1. Remove the battery cover and one battery and wait for 10 seconds. 
  2. Put in the battery and wait for a long and a short beep. 
  3. After hearing the beeps, press the LOCK button thrice within 3 seconds. 
  4. When the lock beeps, the indicator will light up green. It means you have reset it to the factory settings.

Resetting the electronic deadbolts with low battery or power failure

Your Defiant electronic deadbolt may be unable to reset when it runs on a low battery. 

However, you can reset the deadbolt if the battery is not very low. There are low chances, though.

If it does not respond, consider changing the battery and then factory reset again. 

In most cases, the deadbolts refuse to respond with low batteries. 

You can understand the low battery issue when the lock constantly beeps or flashes a red light.

As for the power outage, the electronic deadbolts will work. 

Many people have a misconception that since these are electronic deadbolts, they won’t work during a power failure. 

But that is not true. 

These deadbolts primarily run on batteries. So, they will respond even during a power outage, not when the battery is low. 

Also, many of these electronic deadbolts have a backlit that allows you to see the keypad and lock or unlock it during a power failure. 

Only those running on electricity will not work during a power outage.

Restoring connectivity for the electronic deadbolts with smart home systems

When resetting your Defiant electronic deadbolt, it returns to a new-manufactured lock. 

So if you have reset your Smart Wi-Fi Defiant Deadbolt, you need to connect it again with your house’s Wi-Fi, mobile phone apps, and other smart devices like Alexa and Google Assistant anew. 

Here are the steps for connection:

  1. Download the Hubspace app. 
  2. Click on the plus icon in the upper right corner. 
  3. Select the ADD PRODUCT option and use the camera to scan the QR code of the interior assembly. 
  4. The lock will appear in the app and the smart system device list. 
  5. Your phone must also have the Alexa and Google Assistant apps to connect the lock. 
  6. You will find the DEFIANT device name in the list when you open them. Either scan the QR code or add the device’s serial number.
  7. Give your lock a name and a location.

The Wi-Fi lock comes with an intelligent hub plug. 

You need to use the plug to restore the Wi-Fi connectivity with the lock. 

You can even use it wireless with Bluetooth, but it does not travel as far as the Wi-Fi connection. 

So, follow the following steps to connect it to the Wi-Fi:

  1. Confirm the app prompts and add the connection gateway. 
  2. Use the camera to scan the QR code of the smart plug.
  3. The plug will show up in the app and the smart device list. 
  4. Connect the plug to the outlet and give the lock a name and location.
  5. Click on the CONNECT option and finish restoring the connectivity. 

Tips and best practices for resetting the electronic deadbolts

If you have gone through the resetting steps, you will understand that resetting a Defiant electronic deadbolt is easy. 

Not only for Defiant, resetting electronic deadbolts of any brand is quite simple. 

Following the manual and asking for the manufacturer’s guidance would be easier.

So, it rarely needs any tips or best practices. Following the process correctly is the only tip and best practice I recommend while resetting. 

However, if you are a beginner, I would like to suggest some advice to make it easier for you:

  • Check the battery level before you reset. Without low batteries, there are high chances your resetting will fail. Since the deadbolts work by batteries, you must have enough battery level for resetting because, after the reset, you have a lot of work to do.
  • Sometimes when resetting doesn’t work, you might have to dismantle the interior and exterior assemblies to check whether all the connections are correctly made. In that case, ensure you have the right tools, like the screws and the screwdriver. Do not lose any screws.
  • Removing only 1-2 batteries would be enough for resetting. You do not have to remove all the four batteries.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s manual for better guidance. It helps you with the steps and guides you to maintain the sequence of every step.
  • Test the deadbolt once. After reconfiguring and restoring the connectivities, try to lock and unlock the door 1-2 times to see if it works. 
  • If you are not confident enough, consider hiring a professional for help.

You do not always need to reset the lock during any problem. In most cases, changing the batteries and connecting the lock wire correctly to the connector port solves maximum issues. But if the problem persists, consider a factory reset.

Having high home security is crucial. Upgrading your house’s regular locks to electronic deadbolts makes your home more secure and safe. But how do you program it? Today, we will learn about Defiant Electronic deadbolt.

To program a Defiant electronic deadbolt, enter a programming code, the desired user code and test the lock. Some models may also allow for features like auto-lock or alarm settings. It is important to keep the programming and user codes secure to ensure the safety and security of the lock.

If you are new and looking for basic programming of Defiant electronic deadbolt, this guide will be your go-to resource. It shares the programming of the defiant electronic deadbolt and ways to troubleshoot common issues while handling these locks. 

Understanding electronic deadbolt hardware components

The Defiant electronic deadbolt is a keyless entry system where you need to use a keypad with some codes to unlock the door. 

The keypad will contain a backlit number, making it easier to unlock the door during low-light conditions. 

You can program the lock with 6-10 user codes. 

It means that each family member can have their codes. 

The lock also contains an in-built alarm which will make a sound if someone else without no code access tries to force open the lock. 

The hardware components of an electronic deadbolt are:

  • The deadbolt latch will extend from the door into the hole of the door frame to lock the door and come back to its position when you lock it. You can adjust it to increase or decrease its size.
  • The keypad with numbers, where you will use codes to lock/unlock the door.
  • A metal back plate with a hole to let the keypad’s cable pass through it.
  • A battery compartment to keep the deadbolts charged.
  • An interior thumb turn or assembly that will let you lock and unlock the door from the inside of the house. 
  • The screws will help attach the deadbolt and battery compartments to the door and secure them.  

Installing and setting up the electronic deadbolt

Installing a defiant electronic deadbolt is relatively easy. 

The lock will come with an installation manual that gives detailed information about installing the lock in your main door. 

You can install the lock on the doors that are 1-⅜ to 1-¾ inches thick in size. 

The lock also has adjustable backsets that encourage them to fit in doors 2-¾ or -2⅜ inches thick. 

The installation steps for different electronic deadbolts can differ from one type to another based on the model. 

In this section, I will share the steps to set up the defiant electronic deadbolt I followed during installation. 

Remove the old lock and start installing the new electronic deadbolt with the following steps:

Step 1

First, install the deadbolt latch. 

You can adjust the latch according to your door’s backset length. 

The backset length measurement is the distance from the door edge to the bore hole’s center.

The latch can be adjusted to fit a 2-⅜ inch or 2-¾ inch backset length. 

The latch is usually set at 2-⅜ inches backset. 

To convert it:

  • Extend the latch bolt by twisting the latch hole with a screwdriver. The lock assembly’s long flat metal blade will pass through the hole.
  • Twist and pull the length to extend or shorten it. 
  • Retract the latch bolt.

When you install the latch, the word UP should be facing upwards, and the bolt must be retracted.

To install the latch, put it into the door bore hole, and attach the face plate with two screws with a screwdriver. 

Step 2

Install the lock assembly now. 

The lock will have a long metal blade and a cable at the back. 

Pass the cable underneath the latch and the flat metal blade through the center of the latch, the small round black part with a hole. 

Remove the keys before you install the keypad assembly. 

Step 3

Now, connect the metal mounting plate. 

Slide the cable from the back of the keypad assembly through the mounting plate. 

There will be several holes in the mounting plate, but you cannot randomly select one hole. 

A rectangular hole will be at the right or left bottom of the metal plate. Pass the cable through it.

Now, attach the metal plate to the door with screwdrivers. 

Step 4 

Take the interior assembly or the battery compartment and uncover it. 

The battery compartment will have two small key-like buttons on both sides. 

Press these buttons and the knob (in the inside direction) to separate the battery compartment from the assembly. 

If there are no such buttons, you can only press the knob in the inside direction to open the battery compartment.

Step 5

Connect the cable to the battery’s connector port.

There will be only one connector port to connect the keypad cable. 

The other port will already have a wire connector. Do not disturb that one.

For a better understanding, the manufacturers will mark the connector port with red ink so you can avoid any mistakes. 

The connector goes only in one way. 

Make sure the metal connector side faces outwards. 

Step 6

Now, place the black cable behind the metal plate, and attach the battery assembly to the door by screwing three screws.

Install another straight metal plate on the other door edge, where the latch will lock the door.

Fill up the battery compartment with four AA alkaline batteries and cover the compartment.

Step 7 

To set up the bolt direction, enter the default master code, and the lock will set it up and complete the installation. 

The latch will go in and out twice and unlock. You have successfully installed and set up the defiant electronic deadbolt. 

The default master code is always 123456. Read on to know how to change or delete the default code. 

Programming the electronic deadbolt for basic functionality 

Programming a defiant electronic default for basic functionality involves adding, changing, or deleting the master and user codes and enabling auto locks. 

Below, I am going to explain step by step. 

Changing the master code

Remember that the default master code for the defiant electronic deadbolt always stays 123456. 

This code will help you put the lock in the programming mode and make further changes in the lock programming. 

After installing and setting up the electronic lock, you must change this Master Code to ensure security. 

If you already have the Defiant lock or think someone is spying on your code, change it to prevent outsiders from changing the lock programming. 

Here are the steps to change the Master code:

  1. Press and hold the SET button until you hear a beep sound from the lock, and release it. 
  2. Enter the current Master code and press the LOCK button. To set a new code, first use the default code. 
  3. Now press 1,0, and press the LOCK button. 
  4. Enter the new Master code with 6 digits and press the LOCK button to complete the code change. 

Adding user codes 

The next step for basic functionality is changing or adding new user codes. 

A User code is also called the access code or the passcode. 

It is a unique code that is used to unlock the door. 

After you install the electronic deadbolt and change the master code, it is time to add a new user code. 

For that:

  1. Press and hold the SET button until a beeping sound is heard. 
  2. Enter the current Master Code and press the LOCK button. 
  3. Press 2, 0, and then again press the LOCK button. 
  4. Enter a new Use Code or 4 to 6 digits and press the LOCK button. 

Method to change the user code:

  1. Press and hold the MODE button until you see the USER option.
  2. Press the DOWN arrow until the screen displays ADD USER, and then press OK.
  3. Enter the current 4-digit user that you use to unlock the door, and then press OK.
  4. Please enter the new user code and press OK twice to confirm it.

To add more user codes, you need to repeat this process. 

To change the user code, you can also delete the existing one and then add a new one. 

A Defiant Electronic deadbolt and put up to 10 User codes with 4-6 digits each. 

If you have set all the 10 User codes, you must delete one existing code and add a new one. 

Deleting an existing User code

To delete an existing user code:

  1. Press and hold the SET button until you hear the beeping sound, then release it. 
  2. Enter the current Master Code and press the LOCK button. 
  3. Press 3,0, and then press the LOCK button again. 
  4. Now, enter the User code you want to delete and press the LOCK button to delete the code. 

You have successfully deleted the user code. 

Try using the code again to confirm that it has been deleted and won’t be used. 

Instead of pressing the 4 and 0, another method is to repeat step 2 and enter the Master code twice, once to unlock and again to confirm. 

When the lock beeps, it indicates that you have deleted the current code.

For multiple codes, you can delete them together instead of repeating this process.

Deleting all the user codes at once

To delete all the User codes together at once:

  1. Press and hold the SET button until the lock makes the beeping sound or flashes red and green, and release it. 
  2. Enter the current Master code and press the LOCK button again. 
  3. Now press 4,0, and then again the LOCK button. 
  4. Press the LOCK button again and complete the deletion. 

The process will delete all the User codes you have used. 

You will now only have the Master code to unlock your house lock if there is no user code. 

Auto-lock on the electronic deadbolt

Sometimes, if you are in a hurry, you might forget to lock the door. 

Do not worry, as these deadbolts have an auto-locking system. 

I love how it auto-locks my door after a few seconds when I forget or am in a hurry. 

The feature remains disabled by default. You must set it up if you are careless about locking the door.

Here are the steps to turn on the Auto-lock for the Defiant electronic deadbolt:

  1. Press and hold the SET key until the lock beeps, and release it. 
  2. Enter the Master Code and press the LOCK button. 
  3. Press 8,0, and then press the LOCK button. 
  4. Again, press 1, press the LOCK button, and complete the Auto-lock process. 

The lock will automatically lock your door if left unlocked for over 10 seconds. 

To disable this feature, repeat the steps, and press 0 instead of 1 in the last step. 

Ten seconds is the default time. You can set it anywhere between 10 and 99. 

To set up with the preferred time:

If you want to turn it on again, repeat the first 3 steps, and press 1 instead of 0. 

Turn on the vacation mode

Vacation mode means you can only unlock the door by the Master code. 

Other members, except the house members, are sometimes provided with user codes. 

Turning the vacation mode on will keep these members from entering your house in your absence, providing extra security. 

To turn on the vacation mode:

  1. Press and hold the SET button and release it. 
  2. Put in the Master code and press the LOCK button. 
  3. Press 5,0, and then the LOCK button. 
  4. Now, press 1 and again the LOCK button to turn on the vacation mode. 

When you return, turn off the vacation mode by repeating the first 3 steps and pressing 0 instead of 1 in the last process.

When you use an electronic deadbolt, you will face several issues since it is an electrical object. 

Below are some common issues you will face and the ways to troubleshoot them:

Keypad not responding

When you find this problem, a common issue is due to low batteries. 

Replace the alkaline batteries with a new ones and recheck the keypad.

If there is still a problem, open the battery or the keypad and see whether the keypad’s cable is correctly connected to the connector port. 

If you still have an issue, reset the lock. 

For resetting:

  1. Remove the battery cover and take out one battery. 
  2. Press and hold the SET button and replace the battery while holding the SET button.
  3. Keep holding it until you hear a long and a short beeping sound. 
  4. Now leave the button after hearing both the long and short beeps. 
  5. Enter the default Master code again, 123456, to complete the process. 

After that, you can follow any steps discussed above for programming. 

Defiant lock master code not transforming

When we install a new electronic lock, our first duty is to change the master code. 

When you change the master code, but the door doesn’t open with it, but the default code, there might have been some known technical issues.

Or you have not correctly followed the changing steps. 

In that case, completely factory reset the Defiant lock and again follow the steps to change the Master code. 

Auto-lock not working

The auto-lock remains disabled by default. 

You need to set the auto-lock option with a few steps mentioned earlier. 

You have battery issues if the auto-lock still does not work after enabling it. Change the battery. 

Another option would be to reset the lock settings. 

Red indicator on after completing the setting

When the red indicator in the lock is still on after you have completed your lock settings, it is mainly because your SET button is jammed.

Is It Safe To Have 2 Power Strips In 1 Outlet?

Power strips can extend the outlet reach and provide extra outlets to plug in multiple appliances in areas with no outlets. But a common question most users ask is whether using 2 power strips in one outlet is possible. That’s what we will discuss today.

Using two power strips in one outlet is not recommended as it can overload the circuit and increase the risk of electrical hazards such as overheating, fire, and damage to electrical devices. Also, check the outlet’s amp, wattage, and voltage. 

When the amps and voltage are high, the outlets can easily handle high-wattage appliances that need high power. 

The 3-prong outlets are all 120V, and the outlets with appropriate diagonal prongs are 240V. 

Calculate the load to manage the risk

Once you have known the limits of your breaker and outlet, determine the amperage of the appliances you want to attach to the power strips.

You need to find the wattage of each device you want to run with the power strips, calculate them and then check whether the outlet with the power strips can handle the wattage. 

When the appliances plugged into the power strips do not exceed the outlet and breaker rating, you can safely plug two power strips into one outlet.

It can be dangerous if the appliance uses more power than the power strip and outlet handle. 

Power strips with short wire cords are better for some heavy appliances than those with long wires. 

However, the wire length won’t be enough; you need a thick gauge. 

Figure out the wire gauge used in the power strip to safely run the heavy appliances. 

The lower the AWG number is, the more competent the power strips will be for heavy electronics.

Do not pull the cord too much when the appliance is connected to the outlet. 

Moving the appliance too much, for example, a laptop while charging, stresses the plug and constantly comes out of the outlet. 

So, try not to put too much tension on the cords. 

If your appliance requires movement while working, consider not using it for some time unless the purpose of plugging in the appliance is served. 

However, you can’t do the same for iron and vacuum cleaners. 

In that case, buy one with a longer cord and plug them into the outlet close to the ground.

4. Lower the socket

It is ideal when you don’t have any toddlers or pets at home. 

When your appliance is heavy and the cord is short, the plug keeps getting loose or unplugged due to the heavy weight. 

Lower spots provide better friction to the plug you have inserted, and the grip stays stronger than the higher spots. 

Outlets close to the ground will support your appliance, keep the wire tension-free, and provide a better grip to the outlet, as the gravity will help the plug. 

5. Bending prongs 

Prongs are the terminals where you insert the outlet. 

If you use the bending prongs, you cannot take out the plug now and then as the bent prongs make a firm grip inside the outlet and keep the plug from coming out easily. 

The direction of the prong bent should be outwards, and the bending should be done carefully. 

The bending of the springs should be light and kept apart from each other so that you can insert it into the plug without any issue. 

Avoid bending too much, as that will break the prongs. 

6. Use an electric cord holder

An electric cord holder can hold the plug in the wall outlet. 

The holder also keeps the cords tensionless. 

The holder is made of plastic and installed above the outlet. 

They keep the plugin in the outlet and prevent constant unplugging.

The socket savers are pushed inside the outlet and kept inside tight so the plug cannot get loose and unplugged.

7. Lock-in plugs 

All plugs are not the same. Some of them are too hard to get unplugged. 

One such example is a lock-in plug that gets locked into its place whenever you connect it to the wall outlet. 

The plug has a hook that keeps it secure and does not allow it to unplug easily. 

It will also keep the children from unplugging it. 

To remove the plug, press the release button. 

To know where the button is and how it works, ask the staff from where you are buying it. 

Otherwise, you won’t be able to plug it from the outlet. 

These lock-in plugs are handy during sensitive situations where the consumer cannot stop their power plugs from getting unplugged. 

You can use them for every appliance, like vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, computers, and security systems. 

8. Outlet Covers 

Use plastic outlet plugs as they can cover the outlets and stop children from sticking metal objects into the slots.

You can use the same covers to stop the plugs from getting unplugged by mistake or toddlers. 

However, one drawback of these covers is that they can provide a choking hazard and break off inside the outlet. 

Please do not ignore this product because of this problem. 

With careful use, you can easily use it as it can protect both your outlet and the plug.

9. Outlet boxes 

These are also outlet covers. 

Some people do not use these boxes because they think these boxes can only protect the outlet but not the plugs. 

Outlet boxes provide room for the plug. 

When you close the box, it will keep your wall outlet and the plug out of anyone’s reach. 

To unplug the plug, you will have to press the 2-button release system. 

Though these are mainly used for outdoor outlets, you can also use them indoors. 

10. Electrical tapes

First of all, tapes are used as temporary solutions. 

If the plugs keep coming out, you must provide some long-term fixes. 

Do not use any random tape. Use electrical tape. 

Since it is not conductive, it won’t be a problem. 

When you do not have the budget to buy good-quality lock-in plugs, outlet boxes, and covers for the time being, you can use tape for temporary solutions. 

Taping the plug to the outlet can stop it from getting unplugged too often. 

Also, the tape covering will make the plug inaccessible and less appealing for toddlers. 

11. Compatible Extension cords

Sometimes, everything is fine, but the short wire cords are the issue. 

In that case, you can use compatible extension cords and avoid the plugs from getting unplugged. 

I sometimes use extension cords to charge my mobile phone as the outlet is far from where I sit to work. 

12. Put furniture in front of the outlet

If you have children in your house who like to play with anything, put furniture in front of the outlet. 

It will block the toddlers from reaching the appliance and unplug the cord from the outlet. 

At the same time, if your appliances are heavy and the cords are short, the furniture can provide support and prevent it from getting unplugged repeatedly. 

13. Keep toddlers away from the cords

Your toddlers can unplug all the appliances if they can reach them. Since cords are dangerous and children are always curious about all things, here are some things to do:

  • Use a cord shortener. It will allow you to store the extra cords inside the receptacle and avoid your child from touching them. 
  • If you have appliances with too long cords, wrap the cords together. 
  • For appliances that constantly need plugging in, use tape to secure the cords to the floor and cover them with a carpet. 
  • If your toddler has a habit of chewing things, use a cord protector to protect the cord from damage and keep your children safe. 

These methods are also applied to houses with pets. 

If your toddlers are a bit grown up, you can explain the dangers of touching those cords and the results of playing or pulling them. 

If they still do not listen, you need to reduce their chances of unplugging the plugs with the following steps:

  • Use the outlets somewhere high, where they cannot reach. Do this only if you have a long cord because shorter cords will again create the same issue. 
  • Avoid plugging and unplugging the wires in front of the children. 
  • Do not leave the appliances plugged in if they are not in use. 
  • Avoid putting bring and colourful objects near your electrical appliances.   

14. Lock plug into the outlet   

You can lock the plug to the outlet.  

There are several methods to lock the plug, and I will share some standard methods I have researched about locking the plug to the outlet. 

Use a key 

  1. Unscrew the outlet plate and find two screws on the top and two at the bottom. 
  2. Put the key in the hole where the plug will go. 
  3. Turn it to the right to lock the plug in place. 
  4. Screw back the plate and cover the outlet.

Ensure you insert the key into the hole and screw the outlets properly. 

Use a clip

  1. Turn off the outlet. 
  2. Use a binder clip for this and securely attach it to the outlet plate. 
  3. Make sure the plug remains secure in the clip. 

Use a cable tie

  1. Cut a piece of cable tie around 6 inches long. 
  2. Take the cable’s end and loop it around the plug tightly. 
  3. Remove the excess cable. 

Use a strap

  1. Cut the strap about 2 feet long. 
  2. Wrap it around the outlet plate and the plug. 
  3. Make sure the strap is wrapped tight, and the plug is secure.
  4. Your plug is locked in place. 

Vacuum cleaner hose

  1. Cut the cleaner hose about 6 inches longer than the plug. 
  2. Cut out a small hole at the hose end and insert the plug. 
  3. Secure the plug and wrap rubber bands around it. 
  4. Ensure the hose is attached correctly to the outlet plate. 
  5. Turn on the cleaner and wait until the plug is sucked into the hose. 
  6. Then, turn off the vacuum cleaner. 
  7. Put back the outlet plate and screw it back and ensure it is tight and doesn’t come off. 

Use a cinder block

  1. Gather a cinder block and a scissor. 
  2. Attach the block to the outlet plate. 
  3. Ensure the plug is secured in the cinder block. 

Unplugging prevention: How to fix an outlet that does not hold a plug?

Outlets can get loose and wear out due to regular usage, sparks, burns, and old age. 

When this happens, you must replace the outlet with a new one. 

You will need an expert to replace the outlet with a new one. 

If you have previous experience, you can do it yourself with the following steps:

  1. Turn off the power to the outlet and ensure that the power is off with a multimeter or non-contact voltage tester.
  2. Remove the outlet cover and take out the receptacle. 
  3. Detach the wires and inspect them for burns or damages. If the wires have any issues, you must hire an electrician. 
  4. If the wires look fine, replace and attach a new outlet.
  5. Make sure to connect the wires to their respective terminals. 
  6. Secure the screws and wires and close the cover plate. 
  7. Turn on the power and check whether the outlet is working or not.

You can always follow the above-explained preventive tips to fix the outlets and plugs in your house. 

But what will you do if the location is not your home but someone else’s or a public place? 

In such conditions, follow the following steps:

  1. Press the plug’s prongs towards one another and put slight pressure to realign them without any breakage. It works well with the 2-prong plugs. 
  2. Push a plastic sleeve called a socket saver into the outlet to ensure the plug stays in place. 
  3. Use electrical tape to keep the plug from falling over. I have already shared this previously.  
  4. Use a cord holder.

Understanding how the thermostat works with Wi-Fi

If you have a Wi-Fi or wireless thermostat, you would want a Wi-Fi connection. 

There are several features in the Honeywell thermostat, for example, Energy Saving via power use report, monitoring the room temperature and humidity, changing the background color, and locking the screen.

Without the connection, you cannot fully experience all the features. Additionally, you won’t receive correct readings.

These thermostats connect to the IP address of your Wi-Fi connection, just like your mobile phones and laptops. 

The thermostat will work in the same way as the other thermostats work. 

Since the smart thermostat works with your Wi-Fi, it will also connect to your smartphone, and you can control it through your phone via mobile apps. 

So, instead of standing in front of the wall to set the thermostat, you can use your phone and set the settings. 

With smartphones, you can manipulate the thermostat remotely. 

To set up the thermostat with Wi-Fi and your smartphone:

  1. By reading the manual, find out how to put the Wi-Fi thermostat into the Wi-Fi setup mode. When you finish it, the thermostat will start sending a wireless signal. 
  2. Take your phone and install the required application for the thermostat. It will help you to connect the thermostat to the Wi-Fi. 
  3. Go to the available networks in the phone and select the network labeled as your Wi-Fi thermostat. It will connect the thermostat to your phone but disconnect the mobile from the Wi-Fi. 
  4. Open the web browser on the phone. Here, you will receive guidance to connect the thermostat to the internet. Select the internet connection name and enter the password. The Wi-Fi thermostat will be connected to the internet.
  5. Now go back to the smartphone and reconnect the mobile with the internet. At this time, both the phone and thermostat will be linked together and connected to the internet. 
  6. Now, you need to use the thermostat’s application on your phone to control the programming.

Even when you make these connections correctly, there will be times when your Wi-Fi thermostat will not show connected to the Wi-Fi.  

Primary reasons include:

  • Unstable internet connections.
  • Weak Wi-Fi signals
  • Thermostat outside the router range
  • Wrong or outdated application
  • The problem with the thermostat or the router connection
  • Too many interferences

Fortunately, these problems can be solved with a few easy troubleshooting steps, and that is what I will share here. 

Let’s talk about the problems and their solutions one by one.

Unstable Wi-Fi connection

Sometimes unstable connections do not connect the thermostat to the Wi-Fi. 

In that case, it is common to see no internet or Wi-Fi connections in the thermostat. 

So, before you try anything else, ensure a stable network connection.

Also, check whether the router is on and can send enough signals to the thermostat. 

To confirm this, try connecting other devices to the Wi-Fi network. 

If that works, try reconnecting the thermostat to your Wi-Fi. 

If there is still a problem, reset your router. 

If the problem persists, maybe the thermostat is the problem, not the Wi-Fi. 

Weak Wi-Fi strength

Sometimes weak Wi-Fi signals also interfere with the connection between the thermostat and the Wi-Fi. 

Even if your thermostat has signals, it will be too low for the device to work at its full potential. 

The reason could be that there is some problem with the Wi-Fi’s signal, the thermostat is outside the Wi-Fi range, or too many interferences are weakening the connection.

Try resetting the router and reconnecting the thermostat with it. 

See if the thermostat is outside the Wi-Fi’s range, try to bring it within the range, or add another router close to the device for full connectivity. 

Clear the interferences, too, for a good connection. 

Incompatible Wi-Fi band

Another problem about which I recently learned is the Wi-Fi band.

Most Wi-Fi routers will have two bands – 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz. 

The 5 GHz gives you the highest strength with the fastest speed. 

But the thermostats are incompatible with this band, resulting in connection failure.

2.4 GHz is the band that is compatible and connects with most thermostats. 

Check the router’s band and see the frequency.  

If you have 5 GHz, it does not connect with the thermostat. 

So, it would be best to have a 2.4 GHz frequency. 

To connect the thermostat to the correct frequency, separate the Wi-Fi frequency, access the router’s options through a web browser, and search for the IP address. 

Open the login page, and use the admin and password for logging in. 

You will find the Wi-Fi tab in the ADVANCED NETWORK SETTINGS in most router settings. 

From there, find the Wi-Fi frequency and change it to 2.4 GHz. 

Restart your router to apply the changes. 

Test your Honeywell thermostat to see if it got connected to the network.

Thermostat outside the range

If your Honeywell thermostat is outside the range of the Wi-Fi connection, your thermostat will not receive any signal. 

The farther the router is from the thermostat, the weaker the connection. Physical barriers also make the connection weak.

So, ensure the thermostat is near the Wi-Fi and within the range. 

Try shifting the location of the thermostat or the router, bring them close to each other (at least within each other’s range) and reconnect them. 

The problem with the Wi-Fi router 

Sometimes, the problem is in the Wi-Fi router, such as loose wires, technical issues, or connectivity problems. 

Even after multiple tries, the problem sometimes persists. 

In that case, try restarting the router. 

When nothing works, restarting or resetting solves maximum issues. Try the following solutions:

  1. Restart your router by unplugging it for 5 minutes. Once your device feels cold, plug it back in and reconnect the power adapter. 
  2. Reconnect all the cables in the configuration and connect your thermostat again.
  3. If you have another Wi-Fi router, try connecting the thermostat to that. If the thermostat works, it means the previous Wi-Fi is at fault. Consult your expert. 
  4. Try connecting your thermostat to the phone’s hotspot. It will tell you whether the Wi-Fi is at fault or the device. 

The problem with the thermostat 

Since it is an electronic device, a thermostat is prone to several issues. 

Sometimes, it becomes tough to identify why the thermostat is the problem behind the connection. 

If you are having such issues, reset the thermostat. 

To reset the thermostat, you need to Power Cycle it for 30 seconds or press and hold the RESET button for 30 seconds. 

If this 30 seconds reset method does not work for your model, consult your thermostat’s manual for the right step. 

Another method for your Honeywell thermostat is:

  1. Remove the thermostat from the wall.
  2. Open the battery compartment and remove the batteries from it. 
  3. Please keep them in the opposite direction for 5 seconds. 
  4. Take them out again after 5 seconds and put the battery correctly.
  5. Please turn on the thermostat and reconnect it with the router.

Remember that factory resetting the thermostat will delete all the enabled features in your thermostat.

So, after the resetting, set up all the settings again.

Your thermostat should connect to the Wi-Fi. But if it doesn’t, call an HVAC expert for help.

You are not using the right app

The Honeywell thermostat works with some applications on mobile phones. 

You need to have these apps to connect the thermostat to the Wi-Fi. 

Two apps are Honeywell Home App and Total Connect Comfort App. 

However, you cannot use just one for all. 

The models that work with Honeywell Home App might not work with Total Connect Comfort App.

The Honeywell Home App works with the Honeywell T-series and Round Smart Thermostat modes. 

The Total Connect Comfort App works with VisionPRO, Prestige, Wi-Fi FocusPRO, and Wi-Fi programmable thermostats.

So, before you troubleshoot when your thermostat does not connect to the Wi-Fi, ensure you have the right app on your phone. 

You are using an outdated mobile app

Apps out of date will not work. 

Therefore, when the app receives a new update, you must update it.

Some bugs create issues and interfere with the connection between the Wi-Fi and the thermostat. 

As a result, your thermostat does not get a Wi-Fi connection.

When you update the apps, these bugs get removed and fixed, further improving the connection between the thermostat and the Wi-Fi.

Check for the updates in your apps in the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. 

Find the apps that need an update and update the apps that link the Wi-Fi to the thermostat. 

Then try reconnecting the thermostat with the Wi-Fi.

If you are still having a problem, try reinstalling the app. 

When nothing works, reset works the best. 

It clears all the problems and interferences and helps the thermostat to connect to the Wi-Fi faster. 

The thermostat firmware is not updated

Many users have reported that the recent firmware updates have fixed maximum Wi-Fi issues. 

If you have not updated the firmware, the thermostat will create issues while connecting with the Wi-Fi. 

So, check whether the firmware is updated. 

To update the firmware of your Honeywell thermostat:

  1. Open the thermostat app on your mobile phone. 
  2. Go to the FIRMWARE tab. 
  3. Click on the SCAN FOR UPDATES and wait for the checker. 
  4. If there is any update available, it will show the updated version. 
  5. Click the DOWNLOAD NOW and update the firmware. 

The thermostat will restart 1-2 times during or after the update. 

After that, reconnect it with the Wi-Fi.

Too many traffic interferences

Too many interferences can weaken the connection between the Wi-Fi and the thermostat. 

So, when your thermostat is not connected to Wi-Fi, the reason is that you have other devices sharing the same network. 

The more devices you add to the network, the more disturbances you will have while connecting the Wi-Fi to the thermostat. 

I faced this same problem once. In my 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band, I had connected too many devices, and then I found out that the thermostat was not getting connected to it. 

So, I removed some connections and then reconnected the thermostat with the Wi-Fi, and it connected instantly. 

That is when I understood the reason behind the Wi-Fi connection in my thermostat. Too much interference can weaken the connection.

So, if you have such a problem, remove some connections from the Wi-Fi. 

Or, you can allow the router to use another Wi-Fi channel than the other one you use with the other connected devices. 

It is not only the connected devices that create interferences but also other barriers like physical or environmental factors. 

Ensure there are no such barriers, like metal, concrete, or other materials, near the router and that the thermostat is within the Wi-Fi range. 

Wi-Fi connectivity drops

Sometimes, your thermostat won’t stay connected when the Wi-Fi connectivity drops. 

Even after trying to link multiple times, it won’t connect it.

For this purpose, disconnecting and reconnecting the thermostat to the Wi-Fi can solve problems like resetting. 

Try the following steps to reconnect it:

  1. Make sure you have the right app on your phone. 
  2. Please open it and set up the application. 
  3. Click on the Wi-Fi setup tab and view the list of possible connections. 
  4. Click on the Wi-Fi network and insert the security key. 
  5. Wait until the thermostat displays the message that the connection is secured.

The problem might be with the app if there is still a problem. 

Consider reinstalling the app again or updating it.

To reinstall the app:

  1. Go to your storage unit on the phone.
  2. Find the app and delete it. 
  3. Go back to the Play Store or Apple Store, find the app, and install it again. 
  4. Set up the app and connect the thermostat to the Wi-Fi.

How does a thermostat work?

When the thermostat detects this temperature, it will not match the rest of your house. 

The thermostat will give wrong signals to the heating system, further stopping it from producing enough heat. 

As a result, you will feel chilled as before. 

The air reaches the wires behind the thermostat to affect the readings. 

The solution is to place the thermostat in a central location of the house. 

This location’s temperature should match the temperature of the rest of the house and give you the correct readings. 

Once you find the right location, ensure no drafts are nearby.
