Changing the batteries of the fire alarms every 12 months is mandatory. 

Still, it is equally important to clean the fire alarm at least once every six months. 

If you have not cleaned the fire alarm for the longest time, there are more chances of dirt and debris accumulating. 

The dirt and debris will block the sensors of the fire alarms. It ends up provoking false fire alarms. 

In the worst cases, dirt and debris accumulation will also prevent the fire alarm from performing even if the fire occurs. 

Once every six months, clean the fire alarm using a vacuum cleaner. 

Remove the outer cover of the fire alarm and wipe all the dirt and debris in it. 

Clean the outer vent of the fire alarm either with the vacuum cleaner or whipping tissues. 

Maintaining the fire alarm’s cleaning schedule will help avoid false alarms, and your fire alarm will work efficiently. 

2. Steam and High Humidity

Fire alarms don’t distinguish between smoke and moisture in the air. 

If you shower or boil water in the kitchen, steam will come out of it, which contains moisture.

  • Install the fire alarm in each bedroom and outside of the sleeping area. 
  • Install the fire detector in the basement and every level of your home. 
  • Install it in the stairway up to the height of the ceiling. 
  • While installing the fire alarm in the base, please attach it to the ceiling near where the next level starts. 
  • Install the fire alarm 10 feet away from the cooking appliance to avoid false fire detections and accumulation of grease in it. 
  • You must install fire detectors on the walls and ceilings. If you decide to install the fire alarm on the wall, the distance between the ceiling and the location of the fire alarm must not be more than 12 feet.
  • Some homes have pitched ceilings. In such cases, you can install the fire alarms 4 feet down the pitch, not directly onto the pitch.

After running the hot water in the drain hose pipe, pour the drain hose cleaner solution of your choice to clear all the clogs. 

For efficient results, disconnect the drain hose from the washing machine.

 Pour the cleaner solution and let it sit for a few minutes.

After the mixture is ready, flush it inside the drain hose and let it soak for 5 to 10 minutes. 

You can also use a snake drawing for effective results. 

It cleans the dirt and debris particles and also helps prevent bad odors. 

5. Salt and water solution to clean

A salt and water solution is another affordable technique to clean the drain hose. 

You can prepare a salt and water solution by adding salt to the bowl of water. 

Let the mixture boil for 10 minutes. 

After that, pour the mixture slowly into the drain hose. Let it soak for 5 to 10 minutes. 

Now, flush the hot water again to remove all the remaining clogs and the saltwater mixture.

  • Another grounding way is by using a grounding bus bar. It is a metal bar you attach to the subpanel to give place to the ground wires for connection. The bus bar has to be bonded to the subpanel enclosure with a bonding jumper wire.
  • The Ufer grounding system is also known as the concrete-encased electrode system. Install a grounding electrode conductor in a concrete foundation or the detached building’s footing. The electrode will then be connected to the subpanel’s ground bus bar. 
  • In a grounding ring system, you install a conductive ring around the building’s perimeter and connect it to the grounding system. Then, connect the conductor to the ring and the ground bus bar in the subpanel.

Despite many ways to ground a subpanel, people mostly use a water pipe, ground plate, or grounding rod. 

I prefer using a ground rod. It is safe, convenient, and easy to install. 

I have a separate subpanel for my detached garage and have used a grounding rod for the grounding.

I bought an 8 feet long rod, dug a hole, installed the rod, and then ran the required wires. 

I kept the grounding rod a few inches above the ground to connect the wire from the electrode to the sub-panel.

Connect one probe of the multimeter to the grounding electrode and the other lead to the grounding conductor.
