  6. Give the ice maker time and check after a few hours to see if it works. 

This will provide a complete power cycle to the ice maker unit and eliminate the errors and glitches that stop it from doing its job.

Even after years of usage and regular maintenance, I face 1-2 issues.

The common problem in the ice maker is the kinked water line or improper connection. 

The improper installment will stop the water from flowing to the ice maker.

Dirty water filter

  • Clean the condenser fan blades.

  • Ensure proper water line connections. It should be connected securely and free from any kinks, debris, or leaks.
  • Refrain from over-filling the ice bin. It can prevent adequate airflow and make the ice cubes clump with each other. 
  • Ensure the correct freezer temperature.

Contact the LG support team when you have tried resetting the ice maker but still can’t figure out the issue.

Hence, you do not receive any troubleshooting for free.

But when the ice maker does not work even after the reset, you have some specific issues that must be addressed. I thought the valve was not open. Upon inspection, I discovered that the tank valve was open, but there wasn’t proper flow. 

Due to this, I was very frustrated when I had to stop in the middle of my cooking. 

If you do not want such interference, you should learn the signs and take initial steps to stop the interruption of your activity. 

So, let’s look at some common symptoms:

  • When there is no gas flow, the equipment will fail to start. 
  • If there is low gas flow, and you have managed to turn on the flame, it will be too weak, and the appliance won’t perform well. 
  • When you turn on the appliance, you will hear hissing and popping sounds for some time. If you do not hear these sounds, it means there is no gas flow.
  • Propane is an odorless gas, and it is challenging to detect a gas leak. So, manufacturers add a chemical with propane which releases a rotten egg smell. The gas may have leaked if you smell a rotten egg smell or do not see any gas flow despite the tank being full and the valve open. 
  • Another sign is fluctuating and spluttering appliances with unstable gas flow. 
  • Appliances like heaters and furnaces will have a pilot light that turns on when gas flows. If there isn’t any gas flow, the light won’t light. 

These signs indicate that there is no gas flow.

Possible Causes of No Gas Flow and Troubleshooting Them 

Lack of propane gas flow is a big issue and can negatively impact the appliance’s performance. 

Generally, the gas tank valve should stay open when you use the gas and fully closed when you do not need it. 

An open valve will allow the gas to flow and reach your gas-powered appliance. 

The problem we will share is that there is no gas flow despite the open valve. 

There could be several reasons. 

Some are as common as empty tanks, and some are as complicated or dangerous as airlocks, lock-outs, or leakage.

No matter what the problem is, it needs to be fixed.

Empty or Low Propane Tanks 

The most common reason behind no gas flow is empty or low gas level.

When the gas valve is open, but there is very low or no gas flow to the appliance, the propane tank may be empty. 

For example, if your propane tank is a 20 to 80-lb model, pick it up and shake it. 

If you cannot lift heavy objects, ask for someone’s help. 

Before lifting, ensure the tank is closed. If the tank is empty, the weight of the tank will be light, and you won’t hear any sloshing sound while shaking it. 

Another way to check is to pour warm water down the tank side. 

Touch the tank in different areas where water has made contact. 

Propane is naturally cold and can absorb warm water’s heat. 

If you feel any cold spot, that’s the level of your propane gas. 

If you do not feel any cold, your tank is empty or almost empty. 

You need to refill the tank before you make any other attempts to repair the gas flow issue. 

Blocked Gas Lines and Clearing Them 

Clogging in the gas lines won’t allow the gas to pass from the tank to the appliance. 

If your tank is full and the gas valve is open, but there is no gas flow to the appliance, check for the gas lines once. 

Over time, these lines can get clogged by rust, debris, and other organic materials infiltrating the system. 

To confirm the problem, inspect the gas lines for dirt, debris, corrosion, or any physical damages. 

If you find clogs, clean them immediately for appropriate gas flow. 

For cleaning, you can use methanol to flush the gas line. 

Or, pour ½ cup baking soda and ½ cup white vinegar down the gas line.

Flush it out with warm water. 

If you find any physical damages, hire an expert to replace the gas lines. 

Checking for Leaks and Safety Measures  

Next, check for leakages. Understanding leakages is difficult unless you inspect it closely. 

Tank valves are kept open when used and closed when not used. 

Let’s say you recently filled up your gas tank and did not even use the gas much. But still, there is no gas flow. 

Gas leakage can be possible in this case. 

To test this, use a gas leakage detector or use soapy water. 

Put some soapy water on the connection points. 

Leaks most commonly occur in the connection between the tank and the appliance. 

If there are bubbles, you have a gas leakage. 

If you ever notice any signs of leakage, you should not use the tank. 

Close the valve, and disconnect the tank until the leakage is fixed. 

A prevalent sign of gas leakage is a rotten egg or sulfur smell. 

Since propane is an odorless gas, manufacturers add chemicals that release a rotten egg or sulfur smell. 

The primary issue causing this odor is likely a leak.

Lock-outs and Airlocks and How to Release Them

The gas tanks will have a safety measure where the tank will lock out if the tank valve or the control is wide open. 

When the valve is wide open, the gas flow exceeds the safety limit. 

For safety, the lock-out feature gets triggered. 

Thus, there won’t be any gas flow when you turn on your appliance next time. 

You need to wait for around 15 minutes to allow the tank to reset. 

Or, check the gas valve’s position closely, and move it near the OFF position to restore the gas flow.

Airlocks result from blockage caused by air bubbles inside the gas line. 

These air bubbles further prevent the gas from running through the pipes and reaching your devices. 

Several reasons can create air bubbles, for example, loose or missing gas caps, damaged fuel lines or faulty pumps, and dirty filters. 

If you suspect the problem:

  • Make sure the gas cap is tight.
  • Check the fuel lines, the pump, and the filter. 

To prevent the issue, hire an electrician every 1-2 years to check the gas lines and pump. 

Change the filters every 3 to 4 months. 

Pressure buildup or drop 

If you have recently refilled your propane gas tank, there might be a pressure buildup which can further trigger the safety valve in the gas tank and turn off the valve.  

As a result, there won’t be any gas flow. 

To fix this, turn off the valve and disconnect it from the appliance. 

Please wait for some time, and then slowly turn it on.  

The same happens during a sudden pressure drop. 

When the safety measure has triggered due to a sudden pressure drop, reset the lock-out. 

Turn off the appliances and the tank valve, wait for some minutes, and then slowly turn them on. 

Mismatched connections and OPD

It is common, especially when it is your first time hooking a propane gas tank to the appliance. 

Tanks that are refilled regularly will have a valve called Overfilling Protection Device, or OPD. 

It’s a check valve that stops the gas from coming out of the tank even if the tank valve is open. 

The only way to let the gas flow out of the tank is to attach a hose with a connector greater than 1 inch long. 

Less than this will not actuate the check valve. 

So, no check valve means no gas flow. 

So, when everything is fine, but there is still no gas flow, you have a less than 1-inch connector. 

Hire an expert to get the connector replaced. 

Also, ensure that the gas line is connected correctly. 

Otherwise, the gas regulator will not allow the gas to flow to the appliance. 

Propane system hoses 

The hose from the propane tank to the propane regulator can stop the gas flow. 

It has a back check valve that can be stuck, stopping the propane flow.

When this happens, try to unstick it by checking for dirt and debris and removing them. 

If the problem persists, you have to replace the propane hose with the help of an expert. 

Regulator Malfunctions and Fixes 

If everything else fails and you still have the same issue, the problem is with the regulators. 

The propane regulator controls the gas pressure coming from the tank. 

The high-pressure gas flowing from the tank will go through the regulator. 

Here, the gas flow will become lower and reach an appropriate level to be used by the gas-powered appliances. 

The regulator sits between the tank and the rest of your system.

A few circumstances can make the regulator malfunction, for example:

  • Manufacturing defect 
  • Regular usage causes wear and tear
  • Loose connections 
  • Dirt and debris 
  • Physical damage like cracks and rust

To find out which one is the issue, you have to examine the regulator closely:

  • Begin with connections like the connection between the tank valve and the regulator inlet, and the regulator outlet and the appliance’s gas inlet. Make sure that the connections are tight. If you suspect leakage, check it with a leakage detector. 
  • Next, check for visible damages, like cracks or wear and tear. Also, check the diaphragm inside the regulator for damages. 
  • Check for dirt and debris; these can create blockages in the regulator or vent. 

Connections can be fixed by tightening the regulator. But you must replace the regulator with a new one for other reasons. 

Hire an expert to get it replaced. 

Consulting a Professional

Consulting a professional is essential when the problem is gas-related because dealing with it alone is risky.

When you experience issues with the propane gas tanks despite trying the troubleshooting steps, reach out to the experts, specially trained experts with the license to do such work.

So, here are some preventive measures you can follow to keep the gas flowing appropriately and maintain the propane gas system and other issues:

Check for gas leaks

Check for gas leaks regularly with a gas leak detector or soapy water.

Apply the soap and water solution to the connections, fittings, and valves. 

Bubbles mean your gas is leaking. Otherwise, everything is fine. 

Hire an expert immediately after you inspect a gas leak. 

Keep the area clean 

Clean the surrounding area around the propane tank and the appliances clean. 

Get rid of dirt and debris, and other materials, especially flammable products, to prevent fire hazards. 

Ensure proper ventilation around the gas-powered appliances. 

Secure the gas tanks

Fasten the propane tank properly and position it upright to prevent tripping. It will avoid damage to the tank and gas leakage. 

Protect from outside weather

Protect the propane tank and your gas-powered appliances from extreme weather conditions. 

Extreme cold weather can affect the regulator and degrade its performance, whereas too much heat will increase the pressure. 

So use protective covers and enclosures. 

Monitor the gas levels

Regularly check the gas levels and refill whenever needed. 

It will prevent you from suffering unstable flames and interruptions between cooking or other work.

A few weeks back, one weekend, I wanted to throw a barbecue party for my friends. 

I set up the propane tank correctly to prevent interference while grilling. 

As I tried turning on the valve, it was too hard. 

I tried turning the valve ready hard multiple times but couldn’t do it. 

After several attempts, I partially turned it on but smelled gas. 

I turned it off immediately, and there too, I struggled.

Troubleshooting propane-related issues require an expert’s attention because they are filled with dangerous flammable gas. 

A little mistake can be hazardous.

Denting

A dented tank is unsafe to use. 

The mild dings can be acceptable to work with, but if it looks like it kicked in, it will do no good.

Before I share the troubleshooting steps to unstick a stuck propane tank valve, you need to be aware of the reasons that cause the issue. 

By this, you can prevent these causes from further occurrence and keep stuck valve issues at bay.

So, what are the causes? There are not many causes, but a few of them that needs your attention:

Rusting or Corrosion 

Rust is the primary cause in many settings and is more impactful when the valve is not opened or closed for months or you have an old stored tank. 

A little bit of corrosion is fine, but if it looks as if the rust eats up the valve, you have a severe issue. 

Thankfully, there are several ways to fix the problem, which I have shared later. 

Valve tightly closed 

It is a good thing to close the valve securely. 

But excessive tightness does no good. 

Instead, you will face difficulties turning it on. 

When you tighten the valve too much, you not only face difficulty in turning it on, but you can also damage the valve while trying to fix it. 

The valve can receive physical damages and cracks, which will require replacement. 

The rule is to tighten the valve enough to prevent gas leaks but not too much so that you can’t open it the next time. 

Foreign substances 

Some foreign substances, like dirt and debris, can hinder the valve’s flexibility. 

The substance may have found its way to the wrong location inside or near the valve’s opening mechanism. 

It happens rarely, but when it happens, you won’t be able to rule it out easily, like the above two. 

Thorough checking and, sometimes, an expert’s help is required. 

Minor dirt and debris are fine, but something hard or big will be difficult to deal with.

Troubleshooting Steps To Unstick A Stuck Propane Tank Valve

It is always wise to hire an expert when you have any problem related to gas tanks. 

Since propane is hazardous, hiring a professional to fix a stuck valve would be best. 

But before that, you can perform a few troubleshooting steps to unstick a stuck valve of a propane gas tank. 

When I had the problem, I hired an expert. 

He has suggested some troubleshooting guides to do this work in case an expert is unavailable for the time being. 

So, let’s look into the troubleshooting methods:

Simple hacks

Begin with simple hacks. 

For safety, I sometimes close the valve too tight. 

As a result, when I need to turn it on, it becomes too tight for me to twist it. 

At this point, a beginner may think the valve is stuck for some issue. But that’s not true. 

You need to try harder and put some pressure while twisting the valve.

Ask for help from someone stronger if needed.

Another way that works is twisting the valve in the opposite direction. 

I didn’t know this, then one of my cousins suggested me. 

When the valve gets stuck due to rust, the corrosion makes a bond between the threaded surfaces. 

When you turn it in the opposite direction, it can break that bond and loosen the valve. 

Reset the valve 

You can try resetting the valve once before you try other things. 

Turn off the propane tank and disconnect it from the grill, cooking range, cooktop, or whatever you use.

Twist the cooking range or the grill gas valve to the highest setting, and then turn it off. Then, turn off everything else. 

Connect the propane tanks to the cooking range or grill gas again, and switch on the valve. It will reset the safety valve. 

Only do it when the safety valve is stuck or incorrectly calibrated.

One of the most straightforward solutions is to clean the valve area. 

In most cases, the propane tanks will stay outdoors. 

The dirt and debris will accumulate around the valve area and jam it. 

As a result, the valve will stay stuck and become challenging to open. 

A quick wiping down of the valve area can remove dirt and debris and make your valve functional. 

Use a wipe made for car interiors; they are gentle to use. 

If the tank is frozen, warm it up with your hands or add some vinegar to break the ice around the valve. 

Rubber around the valve area

You need an extra grip if you still cannot unstick the propane tank valve. In that case, use rubber. 

Rubber provides additional grip, which helps turn the valve impactful. 

There are two ways to use rubber to open the valve:

  • Wrap a rubber band around the valve knob to increase the grip, and turn it using your bare hands. You can also use this method when camping and running low on supplies. 
  • Put on rubber gloves to improve the grip and open the valve. Rubber gloves are more impactful than the rubber band. 

Using Penetrating Oil

Unsticking a propane tank valve is challenging. 

When rubber doesn’t work, you need to make the valve knob loose with oil, like penetrating oil. 

Penetrating oil is a lubricant that can loosen and free up tight or corroded metal parts. It can work for a stuck knob too. 

Take the penetrating oil can shake it well, and apply it to the valve where it is stuck. 

Ensure the oil penetrates the area where the valve stem connects the valve body.

Use enough oil to let it sip into the tight areas.  

Wait for 10-15 minutes, and then try opening the valve. 

If it still doesn’t open, wait for another 15 minutes and try opening it. 

If it doesn’t open, try something else or hire an electrician. 

WD-40 or Lubricants

You can follow the same steps as penetrating oil if you want to use WD-40 or any such lubricants. 

When a valve is badly stuck by dirt or debris and rust, lubricants can loosen the valve. 

But when the rust is too much, it becomes challenging to unstick. 

Spray some WD-40 or a similar type of lubricant on the valve, focusing mainly on the stuck areas. 

Wait 2-3 minutes, and try to wiggle the valve back and forth. 

If the lubricant works well, rust will fall off, and the shaft will loosen. 

Using a Wrench or Pliers

Pliers or a wrench can provide a better grip than rubber. 

Before this step, you may or may not need to use oil or lubricant. 

First, try without lubricant. 

If the valve opens, well and good. 

If not, try it after applying the oil or lubricant. It should work at this step. 

Use the pliers to get hold of the valve, make a firm grip, and try twisting the valve. 

Many house owners do not appreciate this step, especially using a wrench, because the user becomes forceful with these tools. 

So, there is a high chance of the valve receiving physical damage and making the tank useless. 

Try pliers if you feel uncomfortable with a wrench.

If you try this method, do not put too much stress or force while twisting the valve. 

Tapping and Gentle Hammering

Oil and lubricant can loosen the stuck valves by around 50%. 

If the condition is too bad, you can try other methods after oiling or lubricating. 

Try this step after you apply the oil or lubricant. 

First, gently tap using a wood, rubber mallet, or metal wrench. Do not hit the valve too much. 

Next, try some slight hammering. 

With light forces, hammer the valve sides and try to vibrate it for loosening. 

Tap and hammer all sides of the valve so that the vibration distributes evenly and helps loosen the valve. 

Try turning the valve back and forth. 

If it is still stuck, apply oil or lubricant again, and repeat tapping and hammering. 

Again, turn the valve back and forth. By this time, it should loosen up. 

If the valve doesn’t open, stop approaching anything else and hire an electrician.

As a beginner, I never attempted any DIYs related to gas tanks. 

I always consulted experts. 

But one day, one professional suggested some DIYs that users can do if professionals are unavailable.

As I said, anything wrong related to gas tanks and valves can be dangerous. 

However, you cannot stop the problems from occurring. 

But you can try your best to avoid the same issue from occurring in the future. 

Here, I will share a few preventive measures to avoid the fuss of the tank valve:

  • When you close the valve, do not twist the valve too tight. We tend to close it tightly to prevent gas leaks and other dangers. But this can create issues later. So, shut it tight, but do not overdo it. 
  • When you buy new propane tanks or refill the old ones, smack the bottom of the tank on the ground 1-2 times slightly. This technique can help loosen the valve to some extent.
  • Do not open the new tank’s valve rapidly. It can jam it the next time, test the water, and work it slowly. 
  • Regularly check the valve areas and clean them if you find any dirt and debris. Cover the valve during humid and rainy weather. 
  • Try to keep the tank in a cool and shaded location.

But approach DIYs if you have detailed information or guidance, the license to do a DIY and past experience.

It has to be within a specific range suitable for the connected appliance. 

When the pressure is too high or low, you must adjust the regulator by consulting the manufacturer’s manual. 

If you cannot do it, replace the regulator.

  1. Turn off the gas supply and the gas-powered appliance. Locate the valve and turn it off. 
  2. Ventilate the area to dissipate residual gas from the surrounding area. 
  3. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the coupling nut that connects the regulator to the gas pipe or gas tank. 
  4. Use a wrench to loosen and disconnect the regulator from both the gas line or tank and the appliance, and remove the hoses from the ends. 
  5.  Inspect the gas line for any damages or leakage. If you find any, you must hire an expert to replace the gas line. 
  6. Install the new regulator and secure it properly. Do not overtighten or under-tighten the regulator. Then, screw the nuts back.
  7. Some regulators may need a pipe thread sealant on the connections. So, apply some before you install the regulator.

The display got frozen and did not change even after trying to change the temperature and the other modes multiple times. 

I also checked the indicators to find hints about what was wrong. Still, I couldn’t figure out any activity in the device.  

After consulting experts and watching DIY videos, I learned some possible causes behind an unresponsive thermostat. 

In this section, I want to share those reasons so you can check them whenever your thermostat is creating a similar issue:

1. Power Supply Problems (Power disruption or outage)

The thermostat is the brain that controls your house’s heating and cooling units. 

Sometimes, you will see the display freezing or the thermostat not responding to your commands. 

When this happens, the thermostat might be wired directly to your house’s electrical system. 

When the house electricity is disrupted suddenly, the thermostat will seize, and the screen will no longer respond to your commands.

2. Tripped breaker

When the circuit powering the thermostat causes some issues, the breaker connected to it will trip off to interrupt the power to the thermostat. 

Once the power cuts off, the thermostat will no longer receive power. 

That is why it won’t respond to your settings or commands. 

Either the screen will freeze to where it was or completely turn off.

3. User Error or Configuration Issues

Most analog thermostats will have one heating, cooling, and off switch and a secondary button for turning the fan on or off. 

Thermostat settings must be configured correctly to match the room temperature, send signals to the HVAC units, and release comfortable air. 

Wrong configurations can lead to unresponsive thermostats. 

For example, some thermostats have a lockout feature. 

If turned on, it can prevent unauthorized people from using it. 

If the user forgets this passcode, the thermostat will become responsive. 

4. Touchscreen issues 

Touchscreen thermostats can have several issues which make the Honeywell thermostat unresponsive:

  • A touchscreen object will work on the touch sensors. If the sensitivity is incorrectly calibrated, your thermostat will not respond to your set commands.
  • Dust and dirt on the screens can also create the same issue.
  • Any physical damage to the screen of the touchscreen thermostat will not allow the device to respond. 

So, check for these when your thermostat is not responding to your settings. 

5. Software glitches and weak internet connections

This applies to all digital Honeywell thermostats. 

The digital touchscreen thermostats will work with software and firmware. 

These need to be updated from time to time. 

You can update manually or set the setting where the device will automatically update to the new updates. 

If the software is not updated, several glitches can make the thermostat unresponsive to your set commands. 

Updating will remove these bugs and glitches.

At the same time, digital thermostats need to be connected to a high-speed Wi-Fi network to work and update automatically. 

The thermostat will not respond to your commands if the Wi-Fi connections are too weak.

6. Battery issues 

It is essential for thermostats that run on batteries. 

Over time the batteries will drain or get damaged. 

A lot of people forget to replace the batteries. 

But these are the ones that need to be replaced once a year. 

When the batteries are too low, the screen will not work as it runs on a full battery. At moments, it will freeze for some time. 

When the batteries run too low, the thermostat does not have enough power to function correctly. 

As a result, it freezes the screen and prevents responses.

Some thermostats use battery power to maintain memory and retain specific settings. 

With low batteries, the device can lose the programmed setting and will try to go back to the default settings, leading to unresponsive behavior. 

7. Wire issues (Interior wiring + Loose wire near the thermostat)

Loose wire connections disrupt the connection between the thermostat and the heating and cooling units. 

Thermostats depend on the electrical connections passing through the wires to send signals and receive information from the HVAC units to control the room temperatures. 

When the wires get loose, the signals do not get transferred correctly. This can further lead to an unresponsive thermostat. 

While researching the wiring issues, I found two wire-related issues:

Bad interior wiring  

If your house is too old, there are chances of frayed or corroded interior wires, also called wall wiring, despite proper maintenance. 

Water can get into the wiring, or rats can chew the wires

If this happens, the old wires will easily get damaged. 

The wires will no longer carry the current to your thermostat, thus making it unresponsive to any settings or commands. 

You have to fix the wires. 

This can be pricey, but you have to fix them. Otherwise, even if you fix the thermostat or get a new one, the problem will remain the same. 

Loose wire near the thermostat 

Another problem related to the wiring is a loose wire near the device.

The thermostat screen could not respond due to loose wires near the thermostat because the wires send signals to the heating and cooling units. 

If the wires are loose, the current cannot pass through the wires, and the screen won’t respond to your commands.

8. Screen cable issues 

Your screen is responding, but you cannot see it correctly. 

People can mistake this as an unresponsive thermostat screen. 

This happens when the screen cable has a fault. 

The screen will fade due to the mini cables attached to the devices. 

The LCD cables are attached to the thermostat devices. 

So, any loose or damaged connection will make your screen constantly turn on and off, and sometimes unresponsiveness. 

You have to remove the casing and the circuit board and then check for them to fix it.

9. Air Filters

All thermostats will have an air filter, and Honeywell, too, will have one. 

These air filters will trap the dirt molecules of the air and provide you with clean, filtered air. 

The filters need to be checked every 3-4 months and changed. 

The air cannot pass properly when the air filters become too dirty. 

As a result, when you set a setting in your thermostat from more hot or cool air, the thermostat may not respond appropriately to the settings. 

The thermostat fails to accurately read the temperature when the air filter becomes too dirty and doesn’t respond. 

10. Open the furnace door

An open furnace door can create several issues, and an unresponsive thermostat is one of them. 

Furnace doors will have a switch that pops out when the door opens. 

When you remove the access panel, the safety switch prevents the burner and the fan from coming out.

When the doors stay closed, it presses against the switch, and the furnace will run correctly after receiving a signal from the thermostat. 

But if the doors are open, the thermostat will stay unresponsive. 

It won’t respond to your heating or cooling settings, and the HVAC won’t work. 

A lot of people do not think about the furnace doors. 

It may seem irrelevant, but this door can create an issue. 

DIY Troubleshooting Guide for fixing an unresponsive Honeywell thermostat 

Now that you know the possible causes behind a Honeywell thermostat not responding, let’s talk about how we can troubleshoot these problems one by one:

Check for power supply and breakers

When your thermostat is not responding, the first thing to check is for the power supplies. 

The screen can freeze or go blank if there has been a constant power fluctuation or outage. So, check for power disruption. 

If there is power, check the breaker. 

If the breaker has tripped, flip it to the ON position. Go to the breaker, and check it.

If the switch is flipped to the OFF position, flip and turn it on. 

If it is stuck at the center, flip it OFF, wait for some time, and flip it to ON.

You have successfully turned on the breaker if there is a click sound.

If the breaker trips again, you have other issues requiring a solution. 

For example, overloading and loose or damaged wires. Fix them first, and then recheck the breaker. 

Verify the configurations 

Check for the configurations if the breaker or power supply is solved, but the thermostat is still not responding. 

Whether it is hot air or cold, set the temperature correctly. 

Please do not set it too high or too low. 

Set the correct mode, like HEAT when the weather is cold and COOL when the temperature is hot. 

Or, you can set it to AUTO. 

This will set the thermostat to the temperature according to your comfort level. 

Examine the touchscreen

It applies to digital thermostats with touch screens. 

Once you have checked the above issues, but the problem is not solved, examine the screen once. 

Clean the screen with a clean, dry cloth if it seems dirty. 

Examine for physical damages as well. 

If there has been any such damage, hire a professional to get the damage repaired. 

You will also require an expert if the touch sensors are not working since these sensors help you set the modes and settings in the device through touch.

Ensure a strong network connection and keep the apps updated

Once the above problems are ruled out, it is time to check for strong internet connections and updates. 

All the digital thermostats will require a strong network connection.

If the Wi-Fi connection weakens, remove the obstacles and bring the router close to the thermostat. 

Now, check for some updates and update your thermostat by following the steps below: 

  1. From your phone, open the Honeywell thermostat app. 
  2. Click on the MENU bar in the top-left corner.
  3. Go to CHECK FOR UPDATES and see if there is any update available. 
  4. If there is, update your thermostat. 
  5. Reboot the thermostat, and the device should work correctly. 

Find and turn on the option AUTO-DATE WHILE USING WI-FI in the phone app for automatic updates. 

This feature will auto-update the software whenever the thermostat is connected to Wi-Fi. 

So, ensure you have a good Wi-Fi connection to update your app. 

If the software glitches are solved, but the thermostat is still the same, keep reading to learn the other issues.

Replace the batteries

After ruling out the power supply, the configuration, the internet connections, and updates, check for the batteries if you still have the same problem.

The batteries need to be replaced at least once a year. 

Replace both batteries and use compatible ones, like AA or AAA lithium batteries. 

At times, old batteries can deplete and damage the circuit. 

If this happens, you have to replace the entire thermostat. 

If you do not have a thermostat with batteries, you won’t have this problem. 

So, you can skip this and move on to check the wires.

Address the wire issues

Wire issues can be tricky. 

If you don’t have any idea about it, you should consult an expert. 

If you have experience, try checking and fixing the thermostat with the following steps:

  1. Turn off the power at the breaker, and turn off your thermostat. 
  2. Remove the thermostat cover and the base plate from the wall. 
  3. Locate the screws fastening the thermostat base to the wall and remove them to remove the device from the wall mount. 
  4. Open the thermostat, and you will find several thin wires bundled together. 
  5. Check for loose or hanging wires or wires connected to the wrong terminals. Disconnect and reconnect the wires in the correct terminals. 
  6. Pull the wires to check for loose connections. If you find any, disconnect and reconnect them tightly. Pull it again slightly to check for their tightness. 
  7. Once satisfied, put back the wires, reassemble the thermostat by connecting the cover plate and base plate, and turn on the circuit.

Examine the screen cables

Remove the thermostat from the wall and the casing covering the touch screen. 

Move the tabs on either side simultaneously and outwards to eliminate the circuit board. 

You will find 2 small ribbon cables plugged into the circuit board. Carefully handle them as they are fragile.

You will see that one cable is marked as LCD and the other one as touchscreen. 

You will also see two small tabs on the cable. 

Pull them up and back. Ensure it is fully seated.

If everything is fine, it will bring back the screen and make it responsive. 

If it doesn’t solve it, keep troubleshooting. 

Change the air filters

When you have ruled out all the thermostat issues, it is time to check for the HVAC units. 

At times, the dirty filters of the HVACs can make your thermostat unresponsive. 

The solution to this problem is relatively easy. 

Check for the air filters every 3 months and replace or wash them every 3-4 months. 

Keep the furnace door closed

Check the furnace doors if the thermostat is still creating issues and not responding well. 

Open doors can freeze the screen or give your thermostat sensor a false reading. 

To fix the problem, open the furnace door and ensure it is appropriately aligned and closed. 

Next time, when you turn on the furnace and find your thermostat is not responding well, check the furnace door once.  

Reset or restart your thermostat

This is the last resort if all the above troubleshooting steps don’t work. 

Sometimes, some glitches will freeze your thermostat, which won’t respond to your settings or commands. 

In such cases, restarting or resetting the thermostat can solve the problem. 

Honeywell thermostats have a lot of models. 

Below, I will share a few models and how to reset each. 

Honeywell 1000 and 2000 series (Battery-powered) 

  1. Turn off the breaker. 
  2. Remove the device cover plate and then go to the battery compartment. 
  3. Remove the batteries, and put them back in the wrong direction. Let it stay for 5 seconds.
  4. Now, remove the batteries again and put them back in the right direction. 
  5. Reattach the device and restart the thermostat. 

Honeywell 4000 series 

Hold the SET and RUN buttons together for some seconds. 

After some time, the thermostat will reset and return to the default settings and mode. 

Honeywell 6000 WF series 

  1. Hold the Up arrow and the FAN button together. 
  2. While pressing them together, set the numbers on the right to 90 and the left to 1. 
  3. Now press DONE and reset the thermostat. 
  4. The screen will return, and the settings will return to the default options. 

Honeywell 8320 and 9580WF

  1. Tap on the SYSTEM on the thermostat. 
  2. Press and hold the box that pops on the screen center. 
  3. Set the left number to 0710 and the right one to 1. 
  4. Press DONE, and your thermostat will reset to the default settings. 

Honeywell 9000 series 

  1. Select MENU. 
  2. Go to the PREFERENCES option. 
  3. Select RESTORE FACTORY DEFAULTS.
  4. A confirmation message will pop out on the screen. Press YES when asked ARE YOU SURE? and your thermostat will reset. 

Honeywell T5/ T5+/T6

Select the MENU bar and keep scrolling until you reach the RESET button. 

Once you press it, a question will appear as “Are you sure?”. Select YES to reset your thermostat. 

Honeywell Lyric and Smart Round Thermostats 

  1. Press and hold the CLOUD icon. 
  2. Then, press and hold the DOWN icon. 
  3. Choose the RESET option when it pops up on the screen to reset the thermostat. 

Disassemble to unfreeze the touchscreen

This troubleshooting step should also be done as a last resort when your screen completely freezes. 

Use this method if you cannot use the screen to reset the touchscreen thermostats. 

A frozen thermostat is similar to an inoperable thermostat. 

In both cases, the touchscreen doesn’t work and needs to be fixed. 

In this case, you have to disassemble the thermostat and then reassemble it to fix it. 

The process is lengthy, but it works. So, let’s go through the steps:

  1. Turn off the thermostat and then the breaker. 
  2. Remove the device from the wall mount and then the batteries. 
  3. Remove the cover plate and the circuit board with a screwdriver. 
  4. Do the same to remove the screen. 
  5. Disconnect the ribbons securing the circuit board to the screen. 
  6. Examine them closely for any damage and dirt or debris. Clean the dirt if you find any. 
  7. Now refasten the ribbons and replace the circuit board and the screen. 
  8. Replace the battery, too, and check the screen’s functionality. 
  9. If this works, reassemble the thermostat and return it to the wall mount.  

While doing this work, ensure that you are correctly grounded. 

Common Symptoms of Unresponsive Screens

Thermostats can control the room temperature to give you a comfortable atmosphere. 

But it can be frustrating to see that the device screen is not responding to the commands you are setting. 

One morning, my Honeywell thermostat became unresponsive. 

I tried many things, like checking the touch controls and indicator lights, but the screen literally froze. 

While it is pretty easy to understand when the device does not respond, I would like to share a few signs that indicate that the device screen is not responding to the commands you have set:

  • Screen freezing is one of the most common signs of an unresponsive thermostat.  
  • The display of the thermostat screen will remain blank. 
  • The thermostat will not display any temperature changes even after you try to change and adjust it.
  • You won’t see any indicators or lights. 
  • The screen will stay unlit or freeze at a certain point. 

Your Honeywell thermostat will not respond when this happens, and it has some issues. 

In most cases, resetting can solve the issue. But at times, even resetting won’t bring any changes to an unresponsive thermostat. 

Upgrading or Replacing the Thermostat

If none of the above troubleshooting steps work and even the professionals cannot fix the problem, replacing the thermostat with a new one will be the only way out. 

At times, old or defective thermostats do not respond much to the settings you have set. 

Old thermostats can wear out and lose their ability to respond to commands or settings. 

If it has been really long, like 10-15 years, you must replace the thermostat with a new one. 

If your new thermostat is creating such problems, you have a defective one that requires a replacement. 

There will always be 1-2 defective products when bought in bulk. 

Either you or someone else will receive that defective product and have issues. 

So, exchange the product. 

Preventive Maintenance

Taking good care of your thermostat is the only way to prevent your thermostat from going unresponsive.

Here are some preventive measures to take that will keep your thermostat from going unresponsive:

  • Clean the screen of your thermostat regularly.  
  • Keep the surrounding of the thermostat clean. Dirt and debris can accumulate, enter the thermostat’s internal components and lead to malfunctioning.
  • Place your thermostat in a proper location. It should be away from direct sunlight and located in the central position of your house to detect the average room temperature. 
  • If you have a digital thermostat, update its software and firmware. 
  • Your digital thermostat should always stay connected to the Wi-Fi. Place the router close to the digital thermostat for good signal strength. 
  • Make sure your thermostat has a stable power source.
  • Use a surge protector for your thermostat to save it from sudden power surges and strikes. 
  • Check your thermostat regularly and see if it is working fine. 
  • If you notice any issues but do not know the right cause, even after you try to check them, call a professional for help. 

Contacting Customer Support 

Knowing why a Honeywell thermostat is not responding is challenging to understand.

  • Contact an electrician first if you have found something weird about the wires. If there is a problem with the wires, they can solve it. This is true only if you have ascertained that your thermostat should not be broken.
